THE ASSIGNMENT
Client: Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism
The city of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second largest, struggles to ensure access to clean water for all residents. Despite being a beautiful and modern city, there are many residents who live on the outskirts and must haul buckets of water scooped by hand from hand dug bore holes.
THE STRATEGY
Building from an initial group of images that were more typical reactive reporting showing lines of people with buckets, I redirected the project and assigned local photographer Zinyange Auntony, who already well understood the issue, to go beyond the surface to get compelling images around the bore holes and follow people home so we could capture how people used this unsafe water in their daily lives. The project exposed the extreme circumstances many families, especially women and girls, go to for basic necessities.
